CORACLERS’ MAIDEN VOYAGE MAKES A SPLASH FOR SEVERN HOSPICE

by Andrew TradeWeb Support
The chairman and distribution manager of Shrewsbury-based Morris Lubricants put their coracle making and paddling skills to the test yesterday (Sunday) to raise money for the Severn Hospice.

Chairman Gareth Jones and Graham Fewtrell crafted their own coracles to navigate over three miles down the River Severn from Edgerley to Shrawardine and around 30 directors and staff from the company were there to cheer them on.

Graham managed to navigate around three-quarters of the route but Gareth completed the whole route, which ended outside the house of Morris Leisure’s managing director Edward Goddard.

Morris Lubricants’ managing director Andrew Goddard manned the support dinghy that followed the coraclers.

At the end, an exhausted Gareth said it was much tougher than he had anticipated but has not ruled out another coracle adventure for his local hospice in Surrey in the future.

Graham said he was happy to have completed three quarters of the challenge and was glad to be back on dry land.

The pair began making the coracles under the guidance of expert Peter Faulkner at Leintwardine during a weekend course in April. Their coracle voyage was part of Morris Lubricants’ £10,000 fundraising challenge to complete the 214-mile Severn Way long-distance footpath in seven different ways.

Staff and friends of Britain’s leading family-owned, independent oil blenders and marketers have already been to the source of the Severn on Plynlimon near Llanidloes and are completing different sections of the walk on foot, in a canoe and coracle, by swimming, cycling, rafting and on horseback.

The footpath is being broken down into five-mile sections for staff and friends to tackle whichever way they choose and all the money raised will go to Severn Hospice.

The company’s management accountant, Phil Gittins, who is co-ordinating the fundraising effort, organised a corporate raft race from Montford Bridge to Shrewsbury and also took part in the Severn Mile Swim last month.

To date the company has raised nearly £7,000. Last year, it raised £20,000 for the Teenage Cancer Trust by scaling the 64 ‘county tops’ of England, Wales, Scotland and the Isles of Wight and Man. The charity has special significance to the company, as Graham Fewtrell’s son, Adam died of a rare form of childhood bone cancer in 2011 at the age of 20.

Mike Perry, the hospice’s community fundraising advisor, said: “We truly appreciate the support of everyone at Morris Lubricants. As a team they are undertaking so much to support their local hospice. The money raised will help us support the growing number of people that need our specialist care.”
