Jaguar XJ220 guru, Don Law, faced a desperate situation in his quest to keep this iconic supercar on the road before he called in Britain’s leading independent lubricants specialist.

One issue alone, if unsolved, would have required all cars to be mothballed. Don, who owns Jaguar XJ220 specialist Don Law Racing in Newcastle-under-Lyme, takes up the story: “JaguarSport had concerns over transmission crown wheel and pinion life during early testing. There was no lubricant on the market in 1991 that could withstand the extreme pressures required for the crown wheel and pinion to survive whilst maintaining the integrity of the unique triple syncromesh design.”

During vehicle production JaguarSport commissioned a one off batch of a specific lubricant in conjunction with transmission designer, Ricardo. In 2008, this stock was rapidly running out, so
Don approached the original supplier and was given the bad news that it could no longer be made again due to the high cost and small batch situation. Pressure from Jaguar and Ricardo came to nothing over the following years of negotiation.

Enter Morris Lubricants, Britain’s leading family-owned, independent oil blenders and marketers based in Shrewsbury, whose team of scientists is always up for a challenge. Don has a 40-year association with Morris Lubricants and put his faith in the company coming up with a solution.

As the final stocks of the old transmission oil ran out late last year, a new batch was produced by Morris Lubricants, using the original specification and Don is delighted with the result.

The new oil carries a blue dye to identify it from the original red dye, which had led to confusion with other transmission lubricants that were also red. “We have seen several crown wheel and pinion failures in recent years and in each case the oil has been suspect, noted by the incorrect colour,” explained Don.

“Thanks to Morris Lubricants the XJ220 legend lives on.”

Andrew Goddard, Morris Lubricants’ managing director, said: “After Don came to us for help, we spoke to Ricardo and clearly understood that this was a unique product specifically designed for this one application.

“With our technical know how, we have the capabilities to blend and formulate lubricants for a huge range of applications. In fact, we have produced an oil for Don that exceeds the original supplier’s specification. We are delighted that we were able to come to Don’s rescue to guarantee the future of his beloved Jaguar XJ220.”

The new oil is available exclusively from [email protected]
