Touring car champion Lea races to hat-trick at Rockingham

One of the hottest talents in the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship celebrated three race victories at Rockingham at the weekend to become the Jack Sears Trophy champion with two rounds to spare.

Hereford-based Lea Wood, 28, who is sponsored leading British independent oil blender and marketer, Morris Lubricants, left rivals in his slipstream as he became the first winner of the new trophy, a competition designed for the older-style S-2000 cars.

From its based in Shrewsbury, Morris Lubricants supplies all the lubricants for Wood’s S2000 NGTC Vauxhall Vectra, which has a two litre turbocharged Swindon Race Engine.

As a result of his superb driving performances this season, Wood has been approached by four teams who wish to sign him up to drive their more powerful NGTC production based race cars in the championship next year.

First, though, he wants to finish the current championship in style by recording more wins in the final rounds at Silverstone on September 28-29 and Brands Hatch on October 12-13. Wood has 13 race wins to his name this season compared to the six of his nearest rival Liam Griffin, who cannot now catch him.

“It was a fantastic weekend,” said Wood, whose previous two drives at Rockingham had ended in disappointment – writing off a Renault Clio in 2008 and having his engine blow up in 2010. “I was fastest in practice and qualifying despite having never raced at Rockingham in a touring car before.

“I was a little unsure about the part of the circuit where I had crashed in 2008, but once I had that sussed it felt so good.”

After cat and mouse tactics with Griffin, who was troubled by gearbox problems, in the first race, he found himself a long way behind leader David Nye but managed to reel him in and pass him on the last lap as his slick tyres proved their worth in the drying conditions.

The final two races were more straight-forward as he led from start to finish, with Griffin’s car problems stopping him competing in the last race.

With the pressure now off, having clinched the Jack Sears Trophy, he plans to give the NGTC production cars a run for their money in the last two rounds.

“In the weekend races, I caught up with a few of them and passed one, so I’m looking forward to the challenge,” said Wood, who was interviewed live in ITV 4 at Rockingham. “The lubricants supplied by Morris Lubricants were brilliant, especially the brake fluid which was tested to the full.”

Andrew Goddard, Morris Lubricants’ managing director, said: “Winning the Jack Sears Trophy with two rounds to spare is an outstanding achievement and confirms the faith that we have in Lea’s ability. We are delighted to have him on board and look forward to seeing him win the
British Touring Car Championship in the near future.”

Under the new sponsorship deal, Morris Lubricants supplies its portfolio of high quality autosport products to keep Wood’s car running smoothly and on track for victory. These products include X-RPM Competition 10W-50 fully synthetic multigrade motor oil and Lodexol XFS 80W-140 fully synthetic transmission fluid.
