Salop Leisure claims bragging rights after charity football match

Award winning caravan dealership Salop Leisure claimed the bragging rights after emerging from an entertaining charity challenge football match against fellow Shrewsbury company Morris Lubricants with a 3-0 victory on Sunday night.

Footballers from both companies were given a rare chance to display their skills at Shrewsbury Town’s Greenhous Meadow Stadium to raise money for the West Midlands Air Ambulance Service.

Following their 3-2 victory over car and commercial dealership Greenhous Group in last year’s charity match, Salop Leisure again claimed the spoils with a first half goal from Josh Davenport followed by second half strikes by Chris Jones and Sam Wright.

“I am delighted with the performance of our team against stiff opposition from Morris Lubricants, particularly in the first half,” said Salop Leisure’s managing director Mark Bebb. “But the best team won on the night and it was good to see some of the older players keeping up with their younger colleagues.”

Andrew Goddard, Morris Lubricants’ managing director, had no complaints about the result and praised his team for competing so well against younger opponents.

“They gave everything and the result was not bad for a team of geriatrics who have not played together before,” he joked. “There are a few sore limbs but they are keen for a return match next year and we plan to get in training for it.

“It was a very entertaining match and a fun way to raise money to support the life-saving work of a great charity.”

Both MDs have pledged to play in the return challenge match next year.

Maria Jones, community fundraising manager at Midlands Air Ambulance Service, thanked both companies for choosing the charity to benefit from the match.

“The match was really good and everybody seemed to enjoy it,” she said. “We appreciate all the support that we receive because every penny counts for us. We need to raise £6.5 million a year to keep the service’s three helicopters operational.”
